To lose weight I need to: eat less, move more.
This is the answer we receive on our health assessment, 99% of the time.
The majority of “diet plans” focus on calorie restriction. The old adage calories in, calories out has forever been and still is the typical go-to for those looking to lose weight. And, it will do just that, create weight loss.
But, if that is the true “answer” why are we not losing weight AND keeping it off?
So you tell yourself (or worse, your doctor or health provider) tells you: it’s your fault. You aren’t following the protocol or you’re not being truthful about what you’re eating or drinking.
But you know you’ve been tracking your food in an app; you’ve been hitting the gym 5-6 days a week and you’re eating all the “right foods.”
What gives? Frustration and guilt set in…
The truth is, we are looking at the wrong equation.
“We can’t measure calories in vs. calories out because your body doesn’t run on equations.
Many complicated, automatic processes (hormonal, metabolic, etc.) are happening inside the body at any one time, and to boil weight loss down to an equation is crazy talk and simply can’t be done.
The closest thing we have to a simple answer as to why people gain or lose weight is a hormone called insulin.
Insulin is a hormone that regulates all the major processes in the body, including fat storage. When you give insulin into the body, over time the patient gains weight. Insulin in = fat stored. Period. The end.”
If we simply change our perspective on “dieting” by understanding the role that insulin (not calories) plays in weight gain we will experience a significant shift in our health and our lives. We know, because we have experienced this change for ourselves as well as the clients we work with.
